I am not handy with a sewing machine. In fact, for the longest time I believed that the needles would somehow snap and poke your eye out (a theory that was never proven, as seamstresses I’ve seen never wore pirate eye patches).
Over the long weekend, my MIL took me to a local store called Len’s Mills, which is basically a dollar store, a fabric store, a pet supply store, and a clothing store all rolled into one glorious mish-mash-hoarder’s-paradise.
My favourite section was by far the fabric area:
Didn’t I tell you it was a bit of a mish-mash? You had to use muscle when shopping here!
They even had two aisles just dedicated to foam and stuffing!
Needless to say, it wasn’t a posh boutique, but if you had the time and patience, you could find some really great stuff there.
I managed to find this really soft piece of material in the clearance section (for $5) and these two 12″x18″ pillows for $5.50 each.
We eyed the measurement and found that two pillow cases could be made, but it would a be a tight fit.
My MIL took the time to teach me the low-down on the sewing machine & what to do when making a pillow case.
We pinned our edges, making sure to leave an empty gap in between (where our pillow case would easily fit in & out of)
After our edges were sewn, we pinned the sides of the pillows & sewed them up (she even taught me how to clip the excess fabric off the inner cornes to make crisper-looking pillows corners on the outside)
Once everything was sewn up, I had some pretty cute pillow cases.
They look pretty similar to ones I’ve seen in Home Sense selling for much more than $7.50 a piece (which is what it cost me) :)
And they’re pretty versatile and can be used in a master bedroom, living space, baby room… you name it :)
(it’s sitting nicely in front of my screen printed pillow)
This long weekend was pretty awesome: I learned how easy & fun sewing is, I made my first two pillows, and most importantly, I still have my eyeballs! ;)
have a relaxing Family Day (for you Ontario-residents), and a fabulous President’s Day (for friends south of the border)!
